Laptop slow down

My compaq 2200 AMD2800/512. Has slowed to a crawl. Tried removing the battery and working off AC only/ no change. Did a CCleaner and a Norton complete scan. One indicator was it had a problem completing a live update from Norton. Tried 3 different restore dates/ would not complete the restore. I suspect one of the kids may have...but don't know. Any ideas or help? Thanks

I'm at work right now, so no direct proof but I'm sure I do. I don't have any large downloads of music/videos/games. Pretty sure it has a 40gig HD. Thanks for the idea, I'll double check at home
