Laptop screen went black

I have a Dell Inspiron and all of a sudden the screen decided to stop working. I was using the laptop and then put the screen down. I came back ten minutes later, put the screen up, and I could only see the dimness of the screen when that little LCD button is pushed down.
I recently replaced the HD and got new RAM. Could any of these be causing the problem? I don't think the LCD is dead and I'm going to try removing the HD and then booting it up when I get home from work.

Try connecting the laptop to a regular monitor to see if it is the laptop display. If the external monitor displays properly then most likely the laptop display. Maybe the flex cable that passes from base to screen. You will need to get it serviced at any rate, but that will narrow down the problem. If the computer is running, it may be possible to access and copy files if you had sharing enabled. Try booting to a floppy or if no floppy to a bootable CD. If your screen works then, that would be an indication of an operating system or possibly harddrive problem.

Well, I took the keyboard off, cleaned and reseated the flex cable, and it seems to work... for now.
