since i installed winXP on my dell inspiron 4100 laptop, my screen size is too small. there is about an inch of black space around my screen. i have tried resetting the desktop properties (properties, settings) to no avail. PLEASE HELP!!!

You would probably do better asking this in the X tra P utrid forum. I don't touch the stuff, myself. Whinedows 2K is the mostest I'll go.
However, the universal answer here is that you have the IMPROPER display driver loaded.
go to the DELL support website, and you probably can download the correct ones.

Just increase your screen resolution to the display's native rez... there's a good chance that'll fill it.

What tropic said and you are in the right forum since a monitor is hardware. If you can't change resolution, then you will probably need a driver
When all else fails beat the $%!* out of it!!!

i have tried to update my display through the dell support site, however i can not find out WHAT kind of display i have (i have looked in the device manager, run belarc advisor and looked on the dell site, and all say that i have the "default monitor") what can i do to find out which one i have BESIDES going thru them one by one?

Went to Dell support, selected the DOWNLOADS tab, entered this or that and ended up HERE:

On the left (it's been a long time, I don't have a Dell anymore)
You can create a user account, and enter pertinent info on you and your machine.
You should be able after doing this to to to the link (on the left) "original configuration" and find out the "as built."

You can logon to the Dell site without creating an account. When you go to support you can get to a screen and enter the system type or the service tag for your laptop. The I4100 comes with either an ATI or nVidia graphics card. This site gives you the download for both.

Another choice is the driver and support CD that came with the system. It installs and lets you pick the driver you are looking to reinstall. Pick one and let it install. After the reboot you should have more control over your display. I service many Dell laptops and have seen this on the 4100 line before. I have received replacement graphics cards where I have an ATI and get an nVidia in replacement. Having to reload the drivers is somewhat common. If you want to be sure of the card then carefully removing the keyboard gets access to a cover over the card. looking at the card there usually is a sticker identifying which one you have.
Good luckRichard
