my daughters dell inspiron laptop now has vertcal green, yellow bands , she claims if u bend the screen to a certain position she can get the logon screen, I havent managed that. Machine works fine with an external monitor. Is this problem just a lead problem from the machine to the screen, an inverter problem ?( not sure what the inverter does), or a problem witht he screen itelf. Any help would be appreciated, i have no problem in dismantling the scree as i have replace the hinges on another machinine

I would vote for a broken screen, and bending the screen is not recommended...........................

I would also guess the screen. That said, that isn't a cheap part. So, DIY may not be the wisest choice. You may at least want to pay for a firm estimate on what needs fixing.
It would help to know more about the bands. So the screen as it now is can't show anything?

thats correct, no images at all, just very thin vertical white lines with interspersed coloured bands varying in width from about 0.25cm to 0.5cm, mainly yellow, purple. on a black background

Does the screen look like that when the laptop is first started too, or can you read text at that point?

If you can't see anything in the PRE-Windows POST screens then the screen or graphics chip are broken. Probably the screen.
