Laptop screen powers off?

Specs: Windows 7, 1.6Ghz Pentium / 1.5GB
I have a Compaq Presario C300 laptop, the battery no longer holds a charge but it worked ifne for 6+ months with just the AC adapter, the adapter plug got cut by accident and I since replaced it, now out of the lube the system will power on, I'll see the Compaq BIOS logo, after that, screen powers off, but the system continues to run, no Windows boot screen, no desktop, nothing (Can't access BIOS settings either, screen turns off trying to access those too), but I can even hear the windows startup sound when it starts, so I know the system is running. Now heres the strange part, theb attery WILL hold a charge for about 15-20 mins, I can boot it WITHOUT the charger plugged in, and it works fine, no problems, starts right up, runs fine. Any help on this?

I've now disocvered that the screen doesn't turn off completely when I plug in the AC adapter, only the backlight, and it will stay off until I restart without the adapter.
