Specs: Windows Vista
[title edit: "not" fully utilized]

hi guys,

my screen isn't filling up my whole laptop screen. it happens randomly everytime i boot up, but around 80-90% of the time i get this. i've included the pic below. i've edited it to add in the black borders on the right and below becoz the print screen only shows the windows screen.

i've tried reformatting my comp to factory settings and got the widescreen the first time, but subsequently when i restarted my laptop, it was back to this. i've tried upgraded the drivers using the hp website before i reformatted my laptop, but i still get this.

my display settings only shows until 1024 by 768

thanks in advance.

Sounds like a driver problem. Laptops are made to switch modes for External Monitors and will cause your screen to narrow to do so. This is done through the driver. You may want to either go to the Website for your laptop (I don't know what it is because you did not supply us with your make and model) and down load the latest drivers or you could try FN + the key that allows you to switch the display modes. It will have a blue monitor picture above it and will most likely be one of the F1-F12 keys on the top of your laptop.

hi, thx for the reply.

i'm using a compaq presario v3507TU. i've tried the update "Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family Video Driver" of which i assume is the monitor driver? from the hp website here ->

it still didnt work.

the FN + f4 didnt work either.

does this means its a hardware failure?
