Laptop screen goes very dark/dim

When I turn my laptop on the screen is ok and displays everything fine. After a short time the screen goes very dim. I can still make out the desktop on the screen but it is very faint. If I press the function key which switches the laptop between normal screen display and TV-out a few times, the screen returns to its normal brightness. However it does go dim again almost immediately after it returns to normal brightness.
Does anyone have any ideas about what could be wrong. I think this is a hardware problem because I have upgraded all relevant drivers.

It sounds like the backlight bulb is dying.

I thought about that but if that was the case why would the screen reappear normal when I use the function key to switch between normal display and tv-out? Wouldnt it not work at all?

Just a thought, check the power save settings. In 2000 and XP the power save features reduce screen brightness after a few minutes of inactivity though this is usually when on battery.
