Laptop screen failure!

My laptop fan gets really hot and has melted the neighbouring connection with the screen such that it intermittently cuts out. I can get it going again by closing and opening the screen but it's irritating.
Is it possible/easy to fit a new screen to a laptop if you can find the right one? If not is it easy/possible to connect to an external monitor (my laptop doesn't have the usual plug on the back of a CPU for the monitor, just USB 2.0 x 4 and one of those round plugs I've never known what they're for)
