Hi,
I was offered to buy 4 thinkpad A22m p3 1 ghz laptops that have problems. 1 has a bios password lock out, 1 has a bad hard drive, 1 has a screen that doesn't work, and 1 has a bad mother board. the guy wanted $240 or $60 for each. Worth it?
I have built several desktops, but have never taken apart a laptop, and don't know if I can fix them or not. I am just kinda wondering if some of you guys think that it would be worth droping the 240 to see if i could repair them.

and also to ask how much of a pain it is to repair laptops.

Thanks!
George

laptop 1 can be fixed easily all bios's have a default password ("back door password" if you prefer that term' you will need to know the bios version etc and then do a search on google

laptop 2 hard drives are easily replaced but the hdd's are more expensive than deskop ones

laptop 3if the screen is shot its not worth it to expensive but check anyway

laptop 4 dont bother i wouldnt

laptop 1 and 2 would be the best buys but run a diagnosis on the all first

If you've got $240.00 to spare and are just dying to learn about Laptops, I can't think of a cheaper education. You'll have your money back if you get just one up and running reliably. Profit possible if you fix two. Even sweeter if you have all the Restore Disks & software + good batteries.

Of course, you could be looking at four dead computers if you can't test them. How well do you know this "Guy"?

They are more complicated to work on but if you're detail oriented and patient enough, it should be no problem to learn. There are Manuals available on line that can be pretty helpful.

Hardest part is making sure you don't leave anything out or place wires where they'll get damaged. Take pictures of disassembly to use on reassemble.

Having four of the same make & model almost guarantees some success. Pull the screen off the Dead MOBO and instll on the one with display Problem. At least you can test one that way. Hard Drive to the one with the bad HDD.

I Just may be a sucker, but I'd be tempted at that price. You can always sell the parts, if nothing else.

Hi, I'm not at all familiar with the A22 but have repaired lots of laptops. If that's a BIOS pasword then you can usually locate the BIOS battery. Remove the main batt, the ac power and the BIOS batt. Wait a couple of hours and put all back. The BIOS should be reset to defaults without a password. On the other hand if that's the case someone would have already fixed it. In general Laptops are a pain in the neck to repair. Luck, Jim

Just buy the two that has the bios password and bad harddrive and then replace the harddrive and the one that has a bios password take the battery out for 10-20 minutes and it should return to default. The other two are more complicated, I wouldn't worry about them. And when you do that, you can do two thing sell them for more than what you paid for them or keep them.

laptop 1 Easy fix as said above.

laptop 2 Replace hard drive with the one from laptop 4

laptop 3 replace screen with the one from laptop 4.

laptop 4 - Well dump it in the trash after taking the screen and hard drive.

(3 runing laptops for 240... good deal.)

I don't know the guy at all. it is in the classifieds in the news paper.

Thanks for all your advice. I think I will make an offer to him and see what he thinks.

They are supposed to come with windows 2000 loaded and have batteries and ac adapters. they also have floppy, cd-rw, one with dvd, and usb ports. The one that he claims has a bad motherboard he says turns off by itself after 5 min on ac or 10 min on battery. I am guessing it is just over heating, if it acturally turns on.

Thanks everyone!

George

I've yet to hear of a laptop you can remove bios battery to clear the password. Typically since a laptop is portable device there easier to steal so the bios password is harder to remove thus somewhat securing your laptop or at least making it theft deterent. I could be wrong tho. Typically you need to buy some kind of parallel or usb key to boot and clear the password, there are other ways to clear a password also.

Unless all the laptops are the same brand the only things that are interchangeable are hard drives, ram, sometimes cd roms. Check to see it there all the same brand if you are planing to buy them all.

ASUS A7V8X
Athlon XP 2700+ @ 2.17ghz
1GB DDR 2700
nVidia 128mb FX 5200
WD 80gb SE
NEC ND-3500AG DVD R/RW

Hi Lude, Usually if you find a small CMOS battery then you can reset the BIOS SETUP by removing it. Of course, you also have to remove the Main Batt and the AC adaptor. You are right, some systems do not have a standard BIOS SETUP but use a file on the HD. Those would have no use for a small Batt. Bios would still be in a Flash mem. Only the SETUP would be on HD.

Good Luck, Jim
