Laptop OS Downgrade from Vista to Win2000

June 15, 2009 at 23:09:09
Specs: win2000 pro and Vista Pro, 3 GB
Because I have lots of experience with computers and the whole installation process of Operating Systems, the idea of downgrading my laptop due to poor frame rates in Team Fortress 2 came to mind.

As I am quite knowledgable in this process on Desktop PC class of computers and absolute new to Laptops, can someone please give me a little advice in this.

I have in my attempts to speed up my new system disabled all startup items, disabled all running programs and so on but still my frame rate is just a little weak for my taste.

As I know Win 2000 requires a lot less performance requirements, I figured on downgrading to this OS. However, is it even possible to do so on a laptop due to driver issues and so on. Also, I have a Windows Basic additgion as well on a laptop that would better run Ultimate or Professional, whichever this one is, so could I switch the OSes between the two systems and call Microsoft so I can reregister both systems?

I have no spare money and as this computer is new I do not wish to upgrade. The graphics are decent as it plays Counter Strike Source but lags just enough to be annoying during Team Fortress 2 even with all the graphics down to the bare minimums.

Any suggestions would be nice. Thank you.

Going from Vista to w2k is an upgrade IMHO

But It wont help your vedio card much.
Strange as it may seem if you wont more
preformance out of the card you got to work the
card not the O/S.
Turn your resolution to up and your vedio
preforman will improve.
ie: 800x600 will have much slower preformance
than if you use 1600x1100

Have you tried windows 7 yet? Might be better off with that. Runs games better than vista. I've heard of it running on 400mhz comps. The rc1 is free to use until next year if you d/l it before the 20th. And its the ultimate version. 2k on a newer laptop could be really buggy

If you decide to install Win2K, I suggest you keep Vista intact, repartition the HDD & create a dual boot setup.

As you said, there *may* be driver issues with the new hardware & old OS but markp1313 brought up a very good point...if you don't have the graphics necessary for gaming, it won't matter which OS you have. Most laptops don't make good gaming machines unless you specifically buy one that's configured for gaming.

How about listing the make/model of your laptop?

The graphics work fine for the game engine as I see with other Half Life 2 games such as Counterstrike. It is just that it is a little heavy proformace wise for TF2 which is the game I play.

As far as the resolution, you have it backwards, lowering it will increase framerates and rasing them will make it look better. I am playing the game on the bare minimum without much luck.

I mentioned the type of Laptop in my first post and there you fcdan look up what it is. As far as the driver issue, I am sure I will have problems downgrading so that is why I am asking. The only real reason I am even really asking is because Vista is such a resource hog while Win 2000 is far less and so on. When I bought this system, it came with Vista Ultimate so it IS capable for more than the bare minimum.

Any additional advice would be nice.
