Comment:

Excuse me for being a bit computer illiterate, but my laptop is failing to start up properly and I reallly need some help as soon as possible.

When I turn it on, the laptop sticks to the startup screen (with the HP logo) for far longer than usual. Eventually it proceeds to as screen where it says:
-
Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 082)
Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

For Realtek RTL8139(X)/8130/810X PCI Fast Ethernet Contoller v2.13 (020326)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM
----

The last 2 lines keep on disappearing then reappearing, as though the process keeps retrying itself.

The computer has been crashing quite a lot recently, and someone knocked it on the floor a couple of weeks ago... though I wouldn't expect that to be related.

You're getting the message that a cable is loose. Sounds like your CD cable jarred loose. Open it up and check your connections.

Keep Smiling
It makes them think you're up to something...

Thanks... Hope it isn't the hard drive. Most of my stuff is backed up, but I've done a lot of work in the week since the last backup : (.

sounds like it is trying to boot from the network
go into the bios and either disable that option or change the boot order
to see if it is obstructing the hdd boot

also try to reseat the hdd
