Laptop not reading dvd's or cd's

January 29, 2012 at 20:44:52
Specs: Windows 7, 2.0/ 2 gigs of ramof ram
Within the past week my drive was working. Today it won't read anything. I have not had any major updates since the last time I used the dvd player. Microsoft fixit says the dvd is in the wrong format, but the dvd is a from the U.S., and even if the format was wrong I figured I would be able to get something. When I right click on the drive after opening "My computer" I get free space 0 bytes, and used space 0 bytes used, as if the drive is empty.

One simple way to determine whether it is a hardware or software problem.
Insert a bootable CD into the drive and reboot the laptop. Press whatever key you need in order to enter bios setup to have the optic drive selected as first boot device.
Save and exit then if the bootable CD boots up you know the hardware is ok and you have a windows problem.
If the drive will not read disks before the operating system starts then it is time to replace it. You may be able to run a lens cleaner through it first and this may restore functionality.

I don't have a bootable disk. It seems most laptops have a special part of the hard drive partitioned so that in case of a crash it boots from there.

PS:When I open the drive I can see the cd/dvd finishing its spin. I will try the lens cleaner tomorrow if I can't find my old XP cd from my old computer.

The boot options will always be there in BIOS setup. I'm not suggesting you do any kind of restoration installation, just insert any bootable CD and test the drive.

Thanks for the bootable cd link. I will have to try it tomorrow. I will use my brother's computer to make one. He has the same OS that I do.
The lens cleaner would not work because the cd/lens cleaner was not detected. Tomorrow night I will post the results.
