Money isnt much of a problem just upgrading for the experiance. all help is needed
plus what is a good dvd drive for a laptop

You're on a very expensive trip here.
Laptops are asy to upgrade for memory, hard disks and additional plug in items such as DVDs [but all these are 2-3 times a desktop components cost].
For the motherboard, you'll find that it's a unique design and can only be replaced by another from the '760' family higher up the range.
You may also need to upgrade the screen, video adapter and other components, because the controllers were built into the MOBO and thus your 'down the range' thinkpad may not have the right components for the new MOBO.
From my last attempt to buy one [as a spare part from IBM] it would be cheaper to buy a used laptop at an online auction! Price was around US$750. IBM still charge for these items as if the laptop was new, therefore the MOBO is around 30% of the total cost of a new thinkpad.
If mobility is not an issue, don't spend on the thinkpad, go and build a really nice powerful desktop with DVD Burner etc.
