Laptop monitor very faint

My laptop monitor suddenly only works very faintly. The hard disk appears to be working normally. I can just enough to log in but cannot use the computer for anything. Any useful advice appreciated.

May we assume that you have already done whatever you can to try to brighten it by use of the Contrast and Brightness controls? If so, you would seem to have a problem with the electronics that requires a trained repair technician to remedy.
