My monitor is always dim, even when I plug in the laptop. Usually, it only dims when running on battery. I've checked the power options, but I can't find anything. This just started recently -- any thoughts??

You are not an idiot. Not knowing how something works maybe makes you lazy for not reading the manual. But not an idiot. I didn't think of that myself because a virtually never work with laptops.
