So recently I'v been having this weird issue with my Laptop's(Inspiron 1100) monitor. Everynow and then the backlight on it seems to just shut itself off for no real reason. It actually happened again while typing this out! Waving my mouse around doesn't seem to get it to come back on. What I have to do is close my laptop and then open it back up to get the light back on. And I'm sure it's just the backlight because when it goes off I can -barely- make out the windows and stuff if I look real closely. So does anyone know the problem? I have the latest drivers for my card. Could it just be a broken wire or something?

Thanks.

It's probably because your backlight is failing, and/or the voltage inverter that supplies high voltage to it is faulty. From your symptoms it sounds like the former - the voltage inverter typically shuts down after a few minutes if it detects something caused by a faulty backlight.

For some info about replacing a voltage inverter or backlight, and what some typical symptoms are, see response 5 in this:

For older laptop models, if you don't want to mess with repairing it yourself, you can often find refurbished display assemblies on the web for a reduced price in comparison to a new one.

It can also be caused by a fault in the wiring between the base and the display, often where it passes through the hinge. That's relatively cheap to fix, but if that were your case you'd likely have symptoms all the time, at least when the lid is in certain positions.
