Good evening all. Just a quick question. My wife has aquired a laptop from her work as they have just upgraded all there units. At the moment it has 2*PC100 128mb cards in it's memory slot. I have at home 2*PC133 256 cards. Can I put these in my dell. I understand that a bus running at 100mhz will always run at 100mhz but surly doubling my memory has got to be an advantage. It also has Win 2000 pro on it and I want to put XP home on.

Cheers all.

One presumes the spare ram you have is laptop ram as the pin configuration on desktop memory is completely different.
Next step is to visit crucial.com and use their search tool to check what ram is compatible with the system

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

another thing that needs to be considered is the maximum amount of ram the system can take. Each slot might only be able to handle a maximum of 128 mb.

I presume this means yes! It is laptop 144 pin I have. BUT according to Dell, I should only use Dells PC100 ram.

According to dell my system can take up to 512mb.

I suppose the question is, Can I f**k it up if I try it?

Cheers all.

If it is pin compatible and PC 133 the worst that can happen is that it wont work but it probably will, albeit at PC 100 speeds. It is extremely unlikely that you will damage anything providing that the memory is not damaged to begin with.

Dell always say that because they want you to pay their exorbitant prices.
