hey, i bought two old laptops to see if i could get one to work. One is a "Hyperdata" brand with 166MHz and 16mb RAM. The other is a Compaq with 133MHz and 32mb RAM. i was able to make the Hyperdata work with Windows 98 but it runs extremley slow, even for the speed and RAM. Why? I got the Compaq to load and i can get into the BIOS, but there is no way to install WIndows because there is no CD Boot option and the Floppy and CD drives interchange (only one in at a time) so i cant install with floppy bott then setup, please advise. Also, could i take the memory out of the Compaq and use it to upgrade the Hyperdata? thanx to anyone who replies.

Your "Hyperdata" machine is slow because it only has 16mb RAM. I'd say 64mb would be optimal for that machine & it would run Win98 reasonably well.

I don't know if the 32mb from the other machine will swap or not....

I wondered about the same issue and had looked it up months ago and saved it. I have not tried it yet, so I can't say if it works or not. So, use at your own risk. Here it is, as I saved it. I apologize to the author, I would credit he/she, but I don't have the info.

Note: These instructions will work only with a Windows 98 or Windows Me startup disk. Also, this process will only work if the laptop computer has only one hard disk or partition. If your laptop has multiple partitions, you will need to remove them before proceeding with the instructions below.

Start your computer with the floppy disk drive in place, and with the startup disk in the drive. When asked if you want to start with CD-ROM support, select Start the computer without CD-ROM support.

You will eventually see the following prompt:
A:\
Above that, you should see a line reading "The diagnostic tools were successfully loaded to drive X:". Throughout this document, replace X: with the drive letter specified by this line. At this prompt, enter:
format c: /s
This command will take a moment to complete, and at the end it will ask you to specify a disk label. Enter an 11-character name or simply press Enter.

Once you are back at the A:\ prompt, enter:
copy oakcd*.sys c:
When the A:\ prompt appears again, enter:
X:
You should now see an X:\ prompt. Enter:
copy mscdex.exe c:
Enter edit . This will open the text editor in DOS. Enter the following line:
c:\mscdex /d:mscd001
Press Alt-f and select Save As... . Name this file c:\autoexec.bat .

Press Alt-f again, and select New.

Type the following line:
DEVICE = C:\oakcdrom.sys /d:mscd001
Press Alt-f and select Save As... . Name this file c:\config.sys .

Turn off the laptop, insert the CD-ROM drive, and restart. The computer will come back up with the A:\ prompt as before. Now, enter D: .

Put the Windows CD in the CD-ROM drive, then enter Setup . This should start Windows Setup.

Installation with Swappable Drives

.. as mentioned there, if the drive's already formatted, just 'sys c:' to make the HDD bootable

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience
