Laptop LCD Screen Fades

When booting the latop, the LCD screen seems to fade and show a green blob. Have checked the video connections and attached external monitor which shows the desktop and works fine. Does anybody know what could be causing the problem? The system is out of warranty. Thanks

Probably the inverter that powers the back-light is giving up the ghost.
The back-light in an LCD is a cold cathode fluorescent tube similar to the ones in offices but a lot smaller. The inverter provides AC current to power it. When it goes, no back-light.
Replacing the inverter is a relatively simple job for a a technician. You might even be able to do it yourself if you have any technical skills providing you can get hold of the right type.
A technician will check the inverter as a matter of routine as it is more likely to be that then the LCD itself.

Did you try in safe mode? I had some similar issues with my Toshiba A105 that seemed to point to an inverter problem, but not in safemode. If the screen is ok in safemode, try updating your bios. This worked for me. Toshiba's bios updates did not mention any issues, but it payed off in my case.
