Someone else had been using my laptop for a while with an external CRT monitor in place of the laptop LCD screen. I took the laptop back today and found that the LCD screen doesn't work. Whenever I activate it, the backlight comes on, but no image appears. Drivers are fine. I've tried everything, as did the geniuses at Gateway tech support. It's a Solo 1450 SE laptop, a little over a year old. Is this some pricey hardware failure? Works fine connected to an external CRT.

With the monitor connected can you get into your BIOS. I have seen laptops with a setting for which display to use.

Else

Other laptops had a key sequence to switch monitors. (You may have forgotten - Check manual)

Not a pricey fix. The data cable for the laptop display is probably bad. It runs from the mobo up the right side hinge, and to the back of the display. It is a drown looking flat, ribbon style data cable. You will be able to find plenty of them on ebay.
