My Gateway 450SX4 laptop's LCD screen just went blank. The laptop boots OK and works normally with an external monitor. Is the screen damaged beyond repair? Or could it be the video controller? But then the external monitor also would not work. Am I right? The LCD was working great until it suddenly went blank. What can I do as a user? Is it possible to open up the LCD screen and find out orf fix the problem? If so how do I do it? Thanks in advance.

From the sounds of it, your FL Inverter is shot and needs replacing. The good news is, it's not a very expensive part and normally isn't too hard to change either. Your best bet will likely be to take it in to a repair shop. If the system is still under warranty talk to the manufacturers about where to take it to get it fixed.

Have you tried switching from the external monitor to the LCD using the keyboard. Usually on laptops there are keys for doing this. You may have hit it by mistake.

Rule #1: Good Computers don't go down.
Rule #2: There is no such thing as a good computer.

It could be (probably is?) the backlight.

Thanks for the pointers. If it is the inverter do I have to buy it do?. The cheapest inverter
for gateway 450sx4 is $99 plus shipping. Its
much cheaper for other laptops or models.
Also is there any online guide on how to replace inverters or is it possible to outline it here? Also the answer to the question about trying the keyboard, yes I have tried switching, it didn't work. It probably is the inverter or may be the backlight as ham30 suggested. The same question about backlight as for the inverter
applies. Thanks to all.
