Laptop LCD Not Working

Specs: Windows XP, 2 gb

Someone I know had their laptop in hibernation mode for a few hours today - when they attempted to resume the computer, the LCD screen was blank.

I restarted the computer several times and can hear the fan and see the CPU lights on the case light up so the computer is starting up.

I disconnected the cable for the LCD and reseated it with no luck. I removed the battery and RAM and also had no luck.

When I connected an external monitor to the laptop and rebooted the screen would display the Windows XP "windows is starting" screen but had horizontal and vertical flickering lines - and would turn off before the login screen.

Does anyone have any clues?

Possibly sounds like the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is going bad. This is a common issue on some models using nvidia GPUs.

If you can get the laptop to start again boot to the BIOS (setup) and check system temperatures.
