Laptop LCD has lines and shadows

My son's dell latitude laptop occasionally has lines that display horizontaly accross the monitor. They show up immediatly while the bios loads and remain after the OS is loaded. Some objects appear to have shadows. Is the LCD connector coming loose or is it something else?
