Comment: Hi Folks I'm having problems with my laptop's keyboard acting up on me. For a while, whenever it started up it would beep for a while, 10 seconds or so, then windows would kick in. i noticed the keyboard was acting eratically (certain keys would stick) and the mouse buttons weren't doing what they should be (left click brings up Properties window instead of opening, right click brings up options menu for a fraction of a second then disappears). The pointer movement is still perfectly fine though. I plugged an external mouse into the ps/2 socket with them same results. Now the keyboard is almost completely dead, only a couple of keys work and they print the wrong characters. Which of course means i can't input my password to log in as administrator so basically all I've got is a shiny silver doorstop! Any idea if it's a hardware or software problem? Thanks in advance!

Reply: (edit)Have you tested these on another computer? So you can be sure whether it is a hardware issue.

Reply: (edit)Hi Dan, thanks for replying. You mean the connect the laptop keyboard to another computer? Is this possible? I was thinking it may be a software problem because the internal mouse behaves the same as a brand new external one that I connected. What do you reckon?

Reply: (edit)Does this system have a touchpad on it? Have seen laptops where the touchpad/keyboard bezel needed to be replaced. If you can plug an external keyboard in, does it act the same or better? If external keyboard works better, I would suspect a bad keyboard. 98% of the population is asleep. The other 2% are staring around in complete amazement, abject terror, or both.

Reply: (edit)I don't think Dan recognized you were talking about a laptop. No, unless you have the exact same modle laptop these parts are not interchangable. See if you can get a hold of a DOS boot disk. Boot into DOS and see if the keyboard still is acting up. This will tell you if it's a software or hardware issue.
