If a lot of fluid was spilled, or if it was spilled and you don't know where it was spilled because you weren't there, or if you have any reason to believe it could have gotten into the base of the computer,
if I were you I would not turn on that computer and I would take out the main battery and uplug it's AC adapter. - wet sugary solutions will fry it, and even dried sugary soultions can cause severe problems.

Keyboards on laptops are supposed to be "spillproof" but sometimes some of the solution gets past it into the components underneath it which can be disasterous, or sometimes the solution will short keyboard contacts. If you're pretty sure not much was spilled and nothing got into the base of the computer.......

If "hits" in those don't help.......
Look at your user manual and see if there are instructions about how to remove the keyboard. If you do not have one on the CD that came with the computer, go to the Gateway web site and get one.
If there are no instructions in that, go to the Gateway web site and look up your model and see if you can find a Maintenance or Service manual for that model or model series - that should have the instructions about how to remove the keyboard.

If a lot of fluid was spilled, or if it was spilled and you don't know where it was spilled because you weren't there, or if you have any reason to believe it could have gotten into the base of the computer, such as through speaker grilles, you must open up the base of the computer and make sure there is no fluid or dried fluid there. See the Maintenance manual.

If you find no maintenance manual or at least info about how to remove the keyboard, you should take it into a laptop repair place - they do these kinds of cleanups all the time.
