Laptop keeps shutting down unless in safe mod

Specs: Windows Vista
I have been having problems with my laptop shutting down on its own, and its getting worse. I would do it from time to time, and then stopped. Then started more frequently. I have run malwarebytes, and cccleaner, and also run AVG, and have no known virus'. I opened up the laptop to check the fan, which seems to be working fine - I thought it was overheating at first. Anyway, now, if I turn it on, I login, and it switches itself off almost immediately. Unless Im in safemode. Usually it will run fine in safemode, but will turn itself off after say an hour.
Any ideas what could be the problem?
Im running vista, toshiba satellite, 2gb ram.
Thanks for any help

Check your temperature with Speedfan or similar.
Check your memory with Memtest86.
Check your hard drive, try disk check first ( In Safe Mode, go to Computer, right click on the drive, choose Tools tab and click CheckDisk now. You will probably have to set it to CheckDisk at restart). If this does not help, use hard drive utility from hard drive mfg, download and burn to bootable CD.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
