Laptop is not start wid pwr supply

Hello Everyone, I have my laptop which was working fine and one day i took it out from the power supply and took it with me to my friend's place and ran it there and it was working fine. and then i came back home and hooked into the power supply and after that i noticed that it was not running from the power supply but from the battery and i tried everything with the batter and still wouldnt work. so i took it to some local technician and he says that my there is chip on the motherboard which converts pwr suply which is fried out. but still i have one question is it possible that my laptop was working with battery but was not taking any thing from the pwr supply and still motherboard is fried up.
