That sounds like a keyboard/mouse issue to me. Can you try using a different keyboard and mouse to see if the problem persists?

Restart in Safe Mode and initiate a system restore to a date well before the issue started. This will roll back system files and the registry that may have been corrupted. Then install, update, and run Malwarebytes to make sure that it was not malware that caused the problem. Remove all it finds, then copy/paste the report back here so others can see what was reported in case there maybe something that is serious enough to need further investigation.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I would make sure to check the keyboard, make sure there isn't something stuck with the backspace key.

OMG don't judge me!

I agree. Before doing anything, it's always a good bet to just try some of the obvious stuff. Plug an external USB keyboard and mouse into the laptop and try opening some files, as well as the search menu. If it doesn't do the same thing, there is a good chance that something is wrong with the laptop's keyboard. It could be something as simple as one of the keys being stuck, or an actual hardware issue with the computer.

If it doesn't turn out to be the keyboard or mouse/trackpad, Fingers' solution would be the next best bet.
