Besides size and speed what are the differences in laptop hdd. Can I use any hdd on a Toshiba 3110 laptop? Thanks

I don't think you can use `any' laptop hard drive.

Laptop drives are 2.5" platters and have smaller connectors. They are not interchangable. You can use a laptop in a desktop with adapters but not the reverse.

99.9% of all laptop size drive will work in any laptop! They are as standardized as desktop IDE HDD are, the only thing you have to look out for is the HDD "cage". Which is the other .1% & if you have the laptop, then you have the cage you need. It's what the drive bolts into & is fitted to the chassis.
Stay away from 7200rpm laptop HDD... just a personal observation.
