The issue I'm having is with my Harddrive. It keeps clicking off and on. I'm almost certain that it is a sign that my HD is about to go out and simply needs to be replaced. The clicking isn't always present. Sometimes it will go hours with out one click. Other times it clicks every few seconds. Smacking the Laptop just over the HD will get it to behave for a little bit. Is there anything I can do to fix this HD. I'm very computer savy and could handle a guide on disasimbling an HD to repair it some how. Any help or guideance would be much appreciated.

There is nothing to disassemble HD except in an airborne-free environment with right tools. You should stop using this HD if you hope for any data recovery.

If the hdd is still under manuf warranty you may be able to have it reworked
you can call the maker of it to find out
I suggest you back it up now!!!!

you may want to run the manufacturers diags software
this will have two things
1. diags to tell you what kind of problems it is having
2.a low level format (may be what you need)

And you do need a cleanroom environment to open it.

Cut the poor guy some slack jboy, afterall he did state in his original post that he was almost certain the clicking is a sign of imminent death for the HDD & he probably was going to replace it anyway.

I actually see nothing wrong with him seeking a second or third opinion - some folks are naturally like that.

If the clicking was constant I would have no problem excepting I need to replace it. However this comes and goes. I see no lack in performance when it comes to loading the system. I guess it would make since that a hard drive issue wouldn't effect the over all performance.

chrisman.7 going to try your suggestion on the diag's. This is more of the direction I wanted to go to asses this issue instead of just surrendering to returning to the manufacture.

Question: If it is about to die due to on and off clicking noises would I notice a lack in performance at all? Also I have noticed that if I level out the surface on the laptop I can go hours at a time with no clicks (a couple of the rubber feet on the laptop are missing). Does this not seam odd?

"I guess it would make since that a hard drive issue wouldn't effect the over all performance."

A severe HDD issue could and does affect the overall performance of the system. Remember, the hard drive is the bedrock of everything you do on the PC - essentially read/write.

It could also be power related, does it happen mostly when the system is on battery and not the mains?

I always keep the power on the system. I haven't made note of the issue with out the system pluged in. Will check on that once I get off work.

Hint: Smacking a laptop, especially over the hard drive, is not a very good idea.
