Comment: I purchased a cheap IBM T21 laptop with a faulty HD. I have confirmed that the HD is definitely faulty so now I want to buy a replacement. The existing one is 20GB. I have found one that is 40GB and it's brand new being sold on a site in NZ that is similar to Ebay. My question is are all laptop hard drives compatible or do they have different shapes, sizes and connections? Thanks heaps Tracey Windows 98SE HP Pavillion Celeron 533MHz HDD 10GB + 4GB 64MB RAM Antiquated & Poor Quality Runs like a dream.

Reply: (edit)Compatibility should be checked, some laptops have proprietary drive connectors and different mounting cofigurations. Just make sure it is compatible with T series, if it specifies this in the specs, you ahould be fine.

Reply: (edit)I have had a (used) laptop drive that physically fit, but would not pick up in the bios. The very same drive worked in a different (brand) laptop, and also with an adaptor in my desktop, so the drive was good. I don't have an answer--better check. Make sure the drive is "thin" enough. I have one old drive out of my Thinkpad 380xd that will not fit my newer Thinkpad 600X
