Laptop freezing up ...Frequently

I just purchased a used laptop today for my daughter who loves to write. When we brought it home to try it out, it kept freezing up on her every 10-15 minutes or so. The previous owner installed Windows 2000 on it at our request (he had offered). But, it think that it was originally operating on Windows 98. Would installing the 2000 version be causing this problem? Or do you think we may have gotten ripped off? Any suggestions how to remedy? Thanks!!!! Stephanie

I recently was working with a computer that would always freeze. The cursor would change to an hour glass, and nothing would respond, not even alt+ctrl+del. Turned out to be a dying hard drive.

At this point... who knows, anything is possible with used stuff. But if the machine was built for win98, then that's what should be running, at least until you have fully tested it anyway.
I would do a complete format and re-install the original OS
