My laptop fan is quiet most of the time (unless CPU is clearly doing a lot of work), but sometimes the fan decides to run for hours on end even though the system appears to be mostly idle (no busy CPU light and Task Manager shows System Idle Process using at least 60% in the CPU column). The fan does pause eventually before it comes on again. Am I missing something? And is this anything to worry about? Can this hurt the fan (or the CPU)? Thanks a lot for any good pointers. Kamal

By the way, how many fans are there really? I get two distinct humming noises that seem to come from two different regions of the laptop at different times. Kamal
It's a mystery as we don't know about your system. Usually just the CPU fan.
Yes, thanks, there's only one fan indeed. I just found out the other noise actually comes from a loaded CD drive when it's doing work it needs to do. My question then is still about the CPU fan that sometimes decides to run for long periods of time. Please ignore my comment about two different noises. Kamal
who cares its not a bad thing? ino it would be good if mine did that. but unless the noise is annoying you i would leave it, its not at all dangerouse to your cpu or fan..though perhaps it may drain your battery.
maybe try one of those programs the monitor your fan speed and temps.
also try resetting your fan settings in your power manager
I agree Computing.net does need an edit button.
i have a similiar question. My fan used to be quiet all the time, even when it was doing large amounts of work, now it makes a whirring noise and is really loud, should i get this checked out? or is there a way to fix it to go back to being quiet?
your bearings are probably screwed, yes get it checked out and perhaps if you have to buy a new fan. there not to expensive after all. I agree Computing.net does need an edit button.
