Laptop DVD/CD drive no longer recognised by BIOS

Specs: Win7 Premium, AMD x2/4GB
I have an Acer 7520 laptop which has an Optiarc DVD-RW drive. It had never caused problems but one day randomly it wasn't showing in 'Computer' in Windows. So I checked in Device Manager, nothing there either, so I assumed it wasn't being seen by the BIOS either.

Sure enough I rebooted my laptop and on the POST screen where the detected drives are listed, there is now only my 2 hard drives - going into the BIOS shows "Optical drive: NONE"

I've tried removing and reseating the drive to no avail. I don't want to buy a new drive in case it's the laptop that's faulty. Could anyone offer some advice or ideas?

You could see if updating the firmware would help, but your BIOS would still need to see the drive first:

Best to determine if the drive works in another system first. If you know someone with a machine that will accept the drive (i.e.--another Acer 7520), see if the other machine "sees" the drive. If not, then it's likely defective.

Try cleaning the contacts on the drive and inside the laptop. Contacts should look shiny.
