today, i was putting my laptop down on the floor, and it slipped out of my hand about 3 inches above the floor -- the left side hit the floor but i caught the right side. i didn't think it was a big deal b/c it was such a short distance and didn't really make a thud, but now nothing will power on -no lights to even indicate that it's connected to a power source. i left it alone for several hours, but still the same deal.
please help!

You might try opening the battery compatment and reinserting it,then carefully check for a loose power adapter jack.If the jack is "wiggly" or loose, then you will have to take it to be repaired.
It could be that the RAM in the primary SODIMM sockets were knocked loose, but you would only be able not to boot the OS.

Different laptops, are "different," but when I get a problem like this, I simplify the problem.
For example, on my Thinkpad, which will start of the power supply--without the battery--
I would "strip" the machine, to see if it will start into the error/setup screen.
I'd remove the CDROM (removeable bay), the hdd, the battery, and add on memory--it has memory on the motherboard.
Try to start off the power supply, and see if anything happens.
If not, and you are not a technician, either look around for a used one on ebay, or decide whether you want to pay a competent tech.
I've found several laptops on ebay for parts--typically "dropped" and killed the display, but the motherboard still good, etc.
