Specs: Windows XP, 1800/800

i have Toshiba laptop Qosmio f15-av201 and the HDD there was broken so i wanted to replace for another one - HITACHI 40G IDE. when i installed WIN XP the installation get cut off in the step where i should chose the partition for installation. i tried 2 x this process but always here PC get stopped.

after that i connected this IDE HDD and USB cable and connected it with another PC. WIN recognized that there is some another hardware but didn't recognized what it is and didnt show that up in My Computer. just notice showed up that i should run chkdsk utility and it could not recognize file called \$gitmap

this HDD didnt appear in My Compiuter and don't know how can i format that or what should i do that it will work and i can put it into my Toshiba laptop and install WIN XP.

Please if you can help it would be really good

Thank you

That's an older laptop, are you sure the laptop is functioning ok (motherboard, RAM, power adapter etc)?

Do you know for sure that the old HDD is bad?

Do you know if this HITACHI 40G IDE is good (new/used)? You can test the HITACHI w/ HDFT (Hitachi Drive Fitness test) utility available from their website. Run the HDFT Full HDD test; and also the Excerciser to test the drive mechanics.

MOOOOooove! OH and you're welcome!
