The laptop will sometimes work great for a few days. All of the sudden the screen will go dim. I can see what is on the screen it's just dimmed so low I can hardly see a thing. This will happen when I am in windows or booting the computer up. I believe it is a hardware issue because it would happen before I get into windows. It happens when running memtest or in the bios.

The only way I can get it back to full brightness is to push the button that turns the display off(like the laptop is closed) and after 5-15 attempts it will come back to full brightness for a bit.

I am not the original owner of the laptop so I am not sure how long this problem has been going on.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Either you've got a wiring problem between the base of the laptop and the display, which is rare, or, more likely, your voltage inverter or backlight for the display is failing.

If you have a vga port and can connect an external monitor to the computer, and use the computer for a while, you can confirm whether the video is working okay (it almost always is).

For some info about replacing a voltage inverter or backlight, and what some typical symptoms are, see response 5 in this:

Thanks for your reply Tubesandwires.

I will hook it up to a monitor and see what kind of results I get.
