Laptop Display Black screen but OK in Safe Mode

Specs: Windows Vista

I have an HP Laptop running Vista. When I boot it normally it just goes to a completely black screen. I have tried an external monitor and that is black too.

I can boot into safe mode and I can see the screen so I can replace drivers etc, but nothing seems to work.

If the Video chip on the motherboard is messed up, how come I can work in safe mode and also get to the bios diagnostics which say nothing's wrong? Surely it should all be black if the chip's malfunctioned, probably through overheating which is a problem I have experienced before so I try to keep the laptop cool.

I'm baffled and would appreciate advice

thx Julian

If safe mode is okay, so is your video chip.

Maybe you installed something recently that's causing the problem, this could be software that installs it's own virtual drivers, such as a third-party firewall, antivirus software or even third-party CD/DVD burning software.

Removing the offending software will fix problem.

If you don't recall installing anything like that, try System Restore in safe mode. Choose a restore date that is prior to when you first noticed the problem.

Could also be due to corrupted display drivers. System Restore, as given, might be the quickest way forward.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
