Comment:

I have a 2100 compaq laptop that is equipped with a 1.6.mhz celeron. The mobo died recently and i have had it replaced. In the troubleshooting process I have acquired a 2.4 ghz mobile p4 that i sent along to be installed with the new mobo. The shop that replaced the mobo told me it would only boot up as far as the windows startup music and then freeze up with the 2.4ghz in it, and that it starts and runs fine with the 1.6ghz in. So my question is can i use the 2.4 chip

Possibilities:
- the P4 chip might be bad.
- the cpu fan needs to be upgraded because of more heat due to higher speed of p4
- BIOS might not guarentee higher clock settings. (ex. I read my motherboard booklet, and it said on my pc, w/ 440BX chipset, 550MHz+ works, but not guarenteed due to bios)

Just to let you know, windows uses most "computing power" after the windows startup music. I had an old computer, and it had the same problem. Input of password...music... FREEZE.

hope this helps

I think the Celeron will run at 100MHz FSB
and the mobile P4 I guess at 133MHz. And
Yuchao719 is right, the Bios has to support
the cpu or it will not work.

@Yuchao719
I know for certain that a 440BX chipset
board may support up to 1,1GHz coppermine
core FCPGA Pentium3 or Celeron. But as you
wrote, you need a fitting Bios!
I have a Asus P2B Rev. 1.04 Slot1 board
with the 440bx and upgraded it to a 733MHz
Celeron which I clock up to 1232MHz. My
luck is that the last beta Bios from Asus
supports those CPUs and also up to 127GB
harddrives. All I neded was a slot1 to
FCPGA adaptercard with the ability to
change the VCore on it (my board revision
on sopports 1,8V+ VCore so the card is set
to 1,8V and makes the board believe the
Celeron runs at 1,8V) and a Celeron with
1,75V VCore so it wouldn't get a too high
voltage.
If you want to know more about that send me
a mail!
