Hi,

I was recently using my laptop when suddenly the entire screen turned bright white. The keyboard stopped responding (CTRL+ALT+DEL didn't work and the Caps Lock light wouldn't change) and so I held the power button to turn it off. When I restarted, the laptop seemed to start OK but then once its POST was finished, it restarted and began to POST again. I tried to enter the BIOS settings (pressed F2 while starting) and all that happens is that the screen turns entirely black until I hold the power button to shut down and restart.

I have also tried the following with no success:

Booting from a Linux live CD and a Windows 2000 CD. Laptop began to boot from the CD but then the screen turned black again.

Plugging in an external monitor while attempting to boot from a CD/enter the bios. Monitor shows POST and then gets "No Signal" at the same time that I get the black screen on my laptop.

Starting the laptop with the battery removed so that it is only running from a mains supply.

Getting into the BIOS with the CD drive and the hard drive removed.

Starting the laptop with only one (256MB) RAM stick in.

Putting a different hard drive in the laptop.

No matter what I seem to try, it either continuously restarts or gives me a black screen (or a "No Signal" message on an external monitor).

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Is the processor cooled by a fan? If so the fan may have died. This would cause an overheating situation. Try booting to the BIOS screens and go to PC Health to monitor CPU temps.

The processor appears to be cooled by a fan. I can hear a fan start to spin and feel cool air coming from a side vent when I turn the laptop on. I can't enter the BIOS settings, I get a black screen each time I try.
