Laptop CD-ROM question

Would it damage the CD-ROM drive to pull it out of the bay while the computer is turned on?

You may damage either the CD or the laptop - the connectors are very close together & you could end up shorting them. Also, they are not designed to be hot-swapped so you'll probably end up freezing Windows at least.

It's a Dell Inspiron 8600

It's brand new and I pulled it out while the computer was on. I had not tried it at that point.

When I did, the light flashes and I hear the CD turning but it doesn't see anything in the drive.
