Try reseating the hard drive

Also boot from your XP Setup CD, and go to the Recovery Console
(Note: if you do not have the Windows Setup CD, then create this Recovery Console boot disc: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com... )

The Recovery Console is the first R prompt that is shown
Basically: Press R, then 1 (for Administrator) then Enter key.

Once in the Recovery Console, type the following on the command line and press Enter:
chkdsk /r
Allow CheckDisk to finish Checking and hopefully Repairing your system
Then enter exit, to Restart, hopefully to Normal Mode
