I've heard it and read it both ways. My personal experience says, if it works without the Battery in place, no foul.
I have found that, over time, the Battery will last longer if it is not continually on the charger. Batteries seem to work best when discharged and recharged rather than kept at full charge (on the Mains) all the time.
All 'round the best bet is to consult the Operating Manual for your specific Make & model, then follow MFG advice. No Manual? contact MFG Tech Support.
Using aftermarket Battery? Contact Vendor.
There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.
If you believe IBM they suggest that you remove the battery when using AC.
The reason is no matter how good your charging circuit is every time it it plugged in the charging circuit tries to charge the battery. Charging the batteries is what makes them go bad.
I agree with IBM.
I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.
I guess the consensus here is: when in doubt or getting mixed responses & you want hard evidence ..... you best consult the operating manual for your specific system.
this area is a mine feild of advice but all depends on what type of battery you got. what is the stuff on the inside. some batterys like satying charge all the time and to kill it leave it flat for an extended perioud of time. some are the compleate oposite.
i would say leaving it in isnt a good idea as it always trys to charge it. i see battery life in number of charges. so if you leave it in every time you switch it on thats the batter degraded by one charge.
one thing that you can do to prolong life is cycle the battery fully when its new and when try to fully flatten it and charge it up.

I treat it like all my rechargeable batteries. They stay in a not charging state. The lead acid I have to check every few months because they do not like being drained. Every other type of technology can be left uncharged for years and years.

Another Question. If for example I'm on mains with the battery inplace and I decide to use the battery or (Visa-Versa), can I just remove the mains jack plug and carry on or, do I have to power the mains down and reboot with just the battery?
just swithc it off at the plug it will work fine. laptops are made to be used like that. just need the battery in place
