How old is the laptop? Batteries do eventually wear and need replacement. They are rated for so many hours/ recharging.
When all else fails beat the $%!* out of it!!!

Two important things about laptop batteries:
1) Don't leave them in the laptop if you use the power cord! If the battery remains it's permanently loaded and unloaded and the battery can only do a certain number of load/unload cycles before it breaks.
2) Never allow the battery to be totally unloaded! This can cause damage or even destroy the battery.
