Hi

I keep my laptop on virtually 24/7, plugged into its power-mains. When I got it six months ago its battery lasted 4 hours easily. Now, on low power mode, XP estimates it will last 1h, then it shuts down at around 60%.

What is wrong with it? Is keeping my laptop on/plugged in bad for the battery? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Thanks

Yes it kills the battery. You should have removed it before plugging laptop to AC power for any extended period (24/7 is way too long). All laptop user manuals recommended that you remove the battery & store it in a cool place.

The AC adapter is provided as a mean to recharge the battery or to use it as an alternative power source for the laptop.

Once damaged. laptop batteries cannot be repaired.

There is a just a vague chance you might restore it somewhat by "cycling" it.

Run on the battery only until it dies out. Recharge then repeat this several times.

Otherwise it's new battery time.

Is it ok to leave it OFF but plugged in?

Thanks a lot for the replies!

Allrighty, I've been power cycling it (recharging it, then running the battery to 0%) and its slowly improving (and I've only done it twice so far!)

Failing that, my dad has a similar laptop he rarely uses (mine is an R50, his is an R51) with one of those extender batteries that are slightly larger than normal ones I can just slide in..

Anyway, so what would be the longest I could keep my laptop on with mains power before I'm looking at battery damage? (strange its happening to my new laptop, my old P166 laptop still gets its full 100% charge and lasts the same amount of time as it did in 1997, and I treated it the same way..)

as does this site . Removing battery is easy. Are you afraid to have it misplaced?

Hmm, I have been powercycling it (recharging it, then letting it run dry, repeated about five times now) and its still getting around 20 minutes battery life, ie it seems to be deteriorating further..

Any ideas other than swap the battery? (I want that to be my last resort..)

When a battery has had it you are about stuck and even when power cycling works it is rarely a long term fix.

You could try the same but not let it get right down to zero but it looks pretty hopeless from what you've said.
