Laptop battery plugged in, not charging

Specs: Windows Vista
my ac adopter for the computer is plugged in,and it charges. but when ever it charge and reaches 56% of battery it stop charging. unless the ac adopter is not plugged in the battery life alway stays at 56%. how can i make it keep charging to 100% so i have a longer battery life with out the wires.

Check the power management limits that have been set. I know on my laptop I can set a lower percentage charge limit before which the battery will not charge and an upper limit at which the battery stops charging. This might be it.
