My laptop sound is VERY low, both with internal and external speakers. is there a software app i can use to increase my volume?

The software should already be on your computer. Have a look in your systray (where the clock is) for a speaker icon. If it is there, double click on it. This will bring up the mixer app. where you can adjust volume.
Another way to do the same thing is to look in your start menu for a folder relating to your soundcard. There should be a shortcut to the mixer application.
A third place to look is Start, Programs, Accessories, Entertainment (or Multimedia).

Jeez, guys. I am not an idiot, I know how to use the windows volume control. the problem is that the audio hardware has a very low volume output. Now, I can use conversion software on my mp3's to give them extremely high volume, or if possible i am looking for a software program that can boost ALL audio output from my pc, savvy?

Laptop audio is usually quite low and especially so on one as old as yours. Now if the external speakers are powered aplified ones and the audio is still very low then you have a problem but you probably wont be able to boost the standard laptop audio any further.
