Laptop acting strange

Specs: Linux i686
My laptop is acting very strange. It keeps making the sound like an USB device has been connected, and then a little symbol appears in the bottom right corner of the screen. Shortly after it makes the sound like the device has been disconnected and the little symbol disappear. I have never experienced such problem ever before, so can't figure out the reason behind this. BTW I have Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, got it few months ago from Dell Outlet through discount deal. Can anyone help me to fix this problem?

I appreciate any assistance you experts can provide.

We are not "experts" (at least most of us aren't). We are just computer users like you with varing levels of experience.

Do you routinely have any external USB devices connected to your laptop (external drive, flash drive, printer, scanner etc.)?

Does your laptop have WiFi or Bluetooth features? Sounds like one of those two may be initiating and then shutting down due to no connectivity.

Passing your cursor over the icon in the tray before it disappears may tell you what device is enabled.
