The AC adapter to my laptop recently died (the power supply made a clicking noise and stopped charging the battery, safe to say it's dead). However, a friend of mine had his old Compaq charger that plugs into the same slot on the laptop perfectly, and the charging light does turn on if i plug it in. I'm just wondering if there would be any problem or risk associated with using this charger with the laptop. I'm no expert in electronics so I hope someone can help me out here. The old laptop's AC adapter's specs (which i'm not sure if i'm reading this right):
Input: 100-240V 60/50Hz 1.5A
Output: 18.5V --- 4.9A 90W MAXAnd the new one:
Input: 100-240V 60/50Hz 1.5A
Output: 19V --- 3.16A 60W MAXSo if anyone can tell me what i'm looking at if i plug this into my computer I'd be greatly appreciative. It's an old laptop and i'm not interested in sinking another $100 into something i'm going to replace in a few months anyway, but I would like to get some use out of it until then.
Thank you,
Richard

the main diff seems to be the amperage and wattage.
4.9 amperes DC and 90 watts on the old one
3.16 amperes DC and 60 watts on the mew one
For charging the battery the new one should be fine, But if you wish to operste the laptop using the AC adapter (new one) it will be underpowred and may not work correctly.
Compaq Presario SR1720NX Desktop Computer
AT&T SBC Yahoo DSL Home
Linksys Router/2 computers

Not only will the new power supply be underpowered if used on mains power, you run the risk of it overheating and causing a fire.
I wouldn't use it. I would get one rated 90 watts or more.
