Keyboard stops working

Specs: Windows XP SP3
I have a wired problem. My keyboard would stop working out of the blue while i am working. I then shutdown my system completely and most of the times it would start working again. Then sometimes the keyboard would stop working within windows and when I shutdown to rectify the problem and power on my system my mouse would also stop working. In such cases I reseat everything from power connections to all plugged in devices and it would start working. Is this a problem with my power supply which one f my friend suggested. But I was wondering how could it be a power supply issue?

Mine is a self assembled AMD X2 Athlon system with 2GB RAM, 250IDE+320SATA+320SATA HDD,

Please advise..

Boot into the BIOS and check the voltages in PC Health. If all the voltages are not within 5% of what the value should be the PSU could be the problem.

Other possibilities include motherboard chip set drivers missing.
